At the International Christian Mompreneur Network, we’re not making New Year’s Resolutions. We’re choosing a scripture verse to guide us through the year instead. We’re selecting a verse that speaks to our hearts and offers support, hope or motivation for us to live out the following year with purpose and direction. The following is part of a series of posts featuring members of the International Christian Mompreneur Network sharing their scripture verse of the year. We pray these posts will inspire and encourage you to select a scripture verse to guide you through the year as well.
“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”— (1 Cor 2:9 ESV)
In my book “7 Simple Skills for Every Woman: Success in Keeping It All Together,” I share how I have selected a Word of the Year every year of my life since I was a 19 year old college student. For 37 years this has been a January tradition that has kept focus in my life. People often ask me how I have written and had 44 books published, stayed happily married for 36 years and raised 3 children to all become leaders, and honestly, this “Word of the Year” tradition has been a big part of the balance and forward movement I have experienced in life.
I have a process that I go through each year to discern God’s Word, verse and motto for the coming year. The most vital first question is, “What ONE change would make the BIGGEST difference in my life?” By taking an honest look in the mirror I usually can discern the most powerful word that will keep me motivated on the journey ahead. For example, this year I knew from last Thanksgiving that 2016 was going to be a challenging uphill climb as we made the big decision to downsize, sell our home and move nearer my husband’s parents to run our freelance Love-Wise ministry from a home base closer to his folks so we can better balance our relationship work with caring for his frail, aging parents.
I can easily feel overwhelmed, discouraged, or exhausted by the long To Do list in the days ahead and the adjustment to a new city, so the only way I know I can keep a positive attitude is to see it as an ADVENTURE! I am very familiar with adventure as I head up an Alaska Kayak Adventure conference for women most years and in America’s last frontier you have to be brave, courageous, confident, adaptable, willing to try new things and keep a positive, fun loving attitude! So I mentally put on my cozy fleece jacket and my Xtratuf boots and took the next step of finding a verse that would capture the thrill, excitement and anticipation of an adventure. I posted a photo of me standing on a cliff with my word of the year: “Adventure” then I asked my Facebook friends for their recommendations. I also inserted a few key words into my Logos Bible software search engine and a few verses from friends, and my Bible study produced a collection of similar verses. My favorite is “ … no eye has seen, no ear has heard, nor no mind imagined what God has planned for those who love Him” (1 Cor. 2:9)
My theme for the year is “Embrace the Adventure” and I am keeping “travel journal” recording God’s promises, spiritual lessons, encouraging and inspiring motivational sayings to keep my heart in the adventure mindset! This year my Word of the Year has already moved my mood from depressed to excited as I look forward to the amazing blessings God has planted on the trail ahead.
