Do you ever get a call or an email from a friend who says “You should meet so-and-so!” It happens to me often and unfortunately, life is so busy that I don’t always get the opportunity to meet so-and-so. But recently, when a mutual friend Maria suggested I talk with Katy Blevins, we actually found the time to get together – live and in person! And I’m so glad we did. Katy is a breath of fresh air. She’s a creative spirit with a flair for business and a heart for supporting other women. And I’m honored to have met her and to introduce you to her today!
Meet Featured Sister Katy Blevins
Business Name: The Modern Femme Movement
Beginning our partnership as female portrait photographers, Somer and I shared a similar vision for collaborative community that quickly graduated to developing a shared professional workplace that provided local business owners and photographers with a dynamic environment in which to host their clients and grow their own business ventures. In 2013, The Studio Hampton Roads was born, starting out in a tiny two room space and graduating to a larger five room house in less than a year. The Studio continues to serve as a creative hotspot for local business owners, new and old, serving as a catalyst for professional development and a soapbox for the possibility that exists when collaboration is championed over competition.
With a knack for social media, creative strategies and limitless passion for authentic community, we successfully developed multiple professional brands almost exclusively through social media channels and word of mouth. As vocal champions for small business development, we’re committed to sharing our expertise in social media and process management to equip and empower other small business owners to confidently engage their clients across social media and turn their dreams into reality. The Hampton Roads Creative serves as our consulting arm, offering new business owners “purpose profiling,” a candid business discussion that delivers brand clarity and strategic mapping as they discover and then act on their unique position in the marketplace. Grounded in trust and a genuine desire to celebrate the success of others, we continue to discover new opportunities to propel business owners confidently into the professional arena.
As busy working moms with an active “mommy blog”, Chaos & Kiddos, our community-minded focus evolved again into the Modern Femme Movement, a collective discussion that brings working women together to explore and redefine success to celebrate professionally adventurous lives that are also fully present at home. Conceptualized on the belief that a massively successful professional life is valueless if you are not able to actively participate in a meaningful personal life, Modern Femme challenges women to engage each other in support and accountability, developing authentic partnerships that collectively drive us all towards a more enriched life that focuses on quality over quantity. In a world where women are often pitted against each other in rigid schools of thought, Modern Femme encourages and celebrates the power of individual choice, acknowledging that success means something different to everyone, and that mutual respect and acceptance fosters a powerful opportunity for women to affect change in today’s world and in the lives of each other.
In May 2016, Modern Femme will host its inaugural convention, a three day experience that will bring working women from all over the world to Virginia Beach, VA to engage over 20 expert speakers on how to redefine their personal success, rediscover their true selves, and then act on reclaiming the life they want. Focused on implementing systems and tools that free up valuable time, the convention will explore how to be a more effective business owner/employee, while also championing self-acceptance, worthiness and active accountability that holds firmly to the value of family and the benefit of positively engaging other women in a shared vision for wellness.
My secret title is Queen Bee, but more appropriately, you’ll find me noted as the Co-Founder and Corporate Publicist for Modern Femme. With over a decade of experience in sales and marketing, I’m most passionate about equipping others to succeed. Nothing excites me more than to see the “light bulb” go off as clients come into the realization that they are able to make their dreams come true. An avid blogger and writer, I’m the lead voice behind Chaos & Kiddos: Working Moms United, and contribute regularly to a variety of respected media outlets, including Scott’s Local Business Corner: The Drive, The Huffington Post, The International Bloggers Association, She Knows: Experts Among Us, FamilyShare.com, The Female Entrepreneur Association, Inside Business, Curatti and more.
As a newly single mom to twin four year old boys with a very close relationship with my teenage step-daughter, I’m intimately familiar with the challenges that single parents face, especially after navigating a personal and financial crisis. I’m at a place in my life where I’m uniquely staged to support and encourage women as they claim self-acceptance, re-establish their self-worth and actively create their “new normal” by taking small, deliberate steps to get life back on track.
That’s a hard one!! If I had to choose, I’d go with Jeremiah 29:11 –
“I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for.”
It’s a constant reminder that not only does God know exactly what He is doing in my life, but He’s also intimately aware with my dreams and aspirations. His future for me will answer all of my prayers and turn my hopes into reality in His perfect timing.
Hobbies, interests, gifts:
People ask me what I do these days and I tell them that my talent is “connecting resources with people.” I’m passionate about relationships, matching up like-minded folks, and making sure people have what they need to excel. I really feel like this excitement for the success of others is my spiritual gift. God has equipped me with a unique ability to help others find a more direct way to achieve their goals.
I’m also a lover of yoga, running, playing with my kids, baking cookies, really lame television and Sour Patch Kids.
Katy’s Family: Twin boys, Ben & Jake (4 1/2 years old) – polar opposites in every way
Step-daughter, Emily (15 years old) – raised her since she was 3 years old (previous marriage).
One dog, Gambit (giant gazelle like puppy)
Handful of fish (that have finally survived more than 2 weeks)
1 tiny baby snail that materialized out of thin air
Greatest challenge as a mom entrepreneur:
I am the poster child for an obsessive overachiever. Learning when and how to say no, and disciplining myself to step away from my work to be fully present with my kids is a daily challenge for me. I think that’s why I’m so excited about the Modern Femme Movement. I am just as thirsty for more guidance, inspiration and support to help me excel professionally but truly be the mom that I want to be and that my kids deserve. I need that accountability from other working moms to help me stay focused on family first, business second. I like to work hard and play hard, but often find myself sucked into a working vortex that can forget to “schedule” play time.
Advice for other mom entrepreneurs:
Give yourself permission to set aside time for self-care and community building. We all desperately need a tribe of like-minded women that understand our challenges, our goals and our purpose. We’re so quick to slap on a smile, isolate ourselves and pretend our worlds are in perfect order. Why? We should be able to honestly and authentically engage other women, sharing life’s ups and downs without being afraid of our own vulnerability.
Because we wear so many hats and are always so busy, we very easily put obstacles in our path that don’t allow us to freely reflect, recharge and restore. We need to be deliberate about stepping away and taking part in opportunities to grow, learn and support ourselves and other women just like us. We need to give ourselves permission to do whatever it takes to keep us at our very best, so that we can be our very best for our families.
Why I love being a part of the Sisterhood of Christian Mompreneurs: I can’t imagine anything more awesome than connecting with women that share my professional drive, my love for my family AND my faith. Talk about coming home! Being able to engage other professionals in a faith-based conversation is a rarity these days, and it’s exciting for me to be able to interweave my faith walk and my professional journey together, as they should be!
