How to Find Peace in the Midst of Chaos

“Peace. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.” – unknown

This quote graced the cover of the Acacia catalog as it landed in my mailbox during a flurry of holiday preparations. I couldn’t help but cut it out. Such a lovely reminder that peace is not to be found in the absence of our daily lives, but rather in the midst of our daily lives.

I tend to forget this simple truth. I often think I need to “get away” in order to find peace. If I could just manage to take a three-day retreat or a relaxing vacation, then maybe I could find peace. The good news is that it’s easier than we think to find peace. We simply need to find a way to be calm in our hearts.

Sure, I practice yoga, journaling, running, prayer…and they help. But they don’t work all by themselves; they are merely the tools. The important lesson for me here is not in the HOW, but in the WHO. The golden nugget is that only I have the power to create peace in my own life. It’s up to me. Nobody is going to give me a more peaceful life. Nobody is going to erase all my troubles, take a load off my overflowing plate of responsibilities or turn down the volume on the chatter in my mind. If that’s going to happen, I’m the one who’s got to do it.

So, as I am bombarded with messages, tasks and activities during the holiday season, I glance at the quote and am reminded that peace begins with me. And I wonder if it’s really that easy…if the secret to living a peace-filled life is as simple as having a calm heart. I intend to test the theory. Anyone else want in?
